Businesses are required to obtain opt-in before initiating marketing, utility, or authentication conversations with customers outside the 24-hcour window. This opt-in can be collected through various channels, both on and off WhatsApp, ensuring customers receive relevant and expected information from businesses they want to hear from. Methods for obtaining opt-in include through your website, interactive voice response (IVR) flows, or within a WhatsApp thread. By utilizing these approaches, businesses can effectively engage with customers while adhering to the necessary guidelines for communication.
Opt-In Requirements for WhatsApp Communication:
1. Clear Consent for Receiving Messages
Businesses must clearly inform users that they are opting in to receive messages via WhatsApp in a transparent manner.
2. Clear Identification of the Business
Businesses must clearly identify their business name when requesting opt-in. The user should know which business they are agreeing to receive messages from.
3. Compliance with Applicable Laws
Businesses must comply with all relevant laws and regulations, including data privacy and consumer protection laws (e.g., GDPR, CCPA).
Opt-In Methods for WhatsApp Communication:
As long as the opt-in method adheres to the above requirements (clear consent, business identification, and legal compliance), it will be considered policy compliant. Below are examples of supported opt-in methods:
1. SMS
Customers can opt-in by replying to an SMS, providing their consent to receive WhatsApp messages
2. Website
Businesses can offer an opt-in form on their website, where users can provide their consent to receive WhatsApp messages by ticking a checkbox or completing a form.
3. In a WhatsApp Thread
Users can opt-in directly within a WhatsApp chat by responding to a consent request message from the business.
4. By Phone (Interactive Voice Response - IVR)
Users can opt-in during a phone call using an IVR system, where they confirm their consent through a verbal or keypad interaction.
5. In Person or on Paper
Customers can sign a physical document or form to provide written consent for receiving WhatsApp messages.
Helpful Tips for Obtaining Opt-In
Businesses should prioritize optimizing the user experience when obtaining opt-in. The following practices can enhance user engagement and satisfaction:
Set Clear Expectations for Messages
Ensure users know the types of messages they will receive by covering all categories in the opt-in, such as:
Offer Separate Opt-In for Different Message Categories
To reduce the likelihood of users blocking your business, offer separate opt-ins for specific categories of messages. This ensures that users only receive content they are interested in.
Provide Opt-Out Options
Clearly outline how users can opt out of specific message categories and honor these requests promptly to maintain trust and satisfaction.
Clear and Intuitive Opt-In/Out Flows
Design simple, user-friendly opt-in and opt-out processes to reduce friction and enhance the user experience.
Communicate the Value of WhatsApp Messages
Highlight the benefits of receiving messages on WhatsApp, such as real-time updates, personalized offers, and seamless customer service.
Monitor Your Quality Rating
Keep track of your quality rating, especially when rolling out new opt-in methods, to maintain positive interactions and improve user experience.
